cherry wood house

crouch end

The original property is a three-storey Edwardian mid-terrace house in Crouch End, North London.

The client brief was to create more usable open space on the ground floor adopting the house to modern family living while maintaining some of the original features.

The ground floor contained a number of small rooms spread out over a split level.

The solution was to remove some internal walls to connect the rooms and to create a flowing space throughout the ground floor. A new opening with wide steps was created to lead from the front reception room into the new open plan kitchen-living area on a lower level

The centre of the ground floor is formed by a bespoke kitchen, a new large-scale timber framed glazed door and a bay window.

The client was interested to integrate aspects inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright interiors. For this large concrete tiles have been custom-made for the kitchen floor to match the Cherokee-red flooring that Frank Lloyd Wright used in many of his projects. The kitchen features bespoke cherry wood wall panels and cabinets. Handmade traditional Moroccan ‘Zelliges’ tiles have been used for the splashback. The palette reflects the earthy woody character of Frank Lloyd Wright’s interiors.

A big new bay window with an integrated bench has been introduced as part of the new dining area. The window is set in a timber niche and can open up entirely with folding-sliding windows into the garden patio of the side return.

Although the rear reception room has been opened up it was important to keep the composition of that space with its rich original features such as an ornate wooden arch, architectural mouldings and stained glass windows.
